Mandatory vaccination for economic frontliners urged

PRESIDENTIAL Adviser for Entrepreneurship Jose Maria “Joey” Concepcion 3rd is proposing mandatory vaccination against Covid-19 for private employees who directly interact with customers regularly and workers who engage in labor-intensive practices.

Concepcion’s proposal covers those who work in hospitality, tourism, restaurants, retail and personal care services, and those in construction, automotive, wearables and manufacturing, electronic semiconductors, and business process outsourcing (BPO).

In a letter to Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello 3rd, Concepcion said the initiative is meant to complement the efforts of government in saving lives and safely reviving the economy, which was battered by the pandemic.

“We must protect the unvaccinated and protect all workers and jobs at all costs. If we require fully vaccinated customers in our businesses, the more reason we need to require labor-intensive workers and economic frontliners to be fully vaccinated too,” he said.

Bello said he will study Concepcion’s suggestion.

“I also want to thank Secretary Bello for being one with the private sector and supporting the industries’ continuous fight to ensure their businesses, employees and customers are protected,” Concepcion said.

He also commended the national government for the increased supply of vaccines, which he said has helped in the effort to safely reopen the economy.

“I would like to commend the government for achieving 80 percent vaccination status in NCR (National Capital Region). However, to stay ahead of the game and to continue the momentum we are experiencing, we need to increase vaccination of areas outside of NCR. Let’s strengthen and create more family and negosyo bubbles in our provinces,” he said.

“We strongly believe that through strong collaboration with the government, we can better prepare toward our country’s recovery,” said Concepcion.
